Desigual is a Spanish fashion brand founded in Barcelona in 1984 by Thomas Meyer in the El Raval district. The brand began with the creation of a jacket made from recycled denim, now recognised as one of the fashion industry’s earliest examples of upcycled design, establishing creativity and reuse at the heart of its identity.
The brand’s name and philosophy were shaped in its early years through collaboration with filmmaker Isabel Coixet, who coined the word “Desigual” alongside the motto “no es lo mismo” (“it’s not the same”), reflecting the brand’s belief in individuality and difference. Early visual identity was further defined by graphic designer Peret, who created the iconic “Humans” logo, symbolising connection and humanity.
From its beginnings in Barcelona, Desigual quickly developed into an expressive and optimistic fashion label inspired by Mediterranean culture, art and creativity. The brand expanded internationally from 2006 onwards, opening stores across Asia, the United States and Latin America, establishing a global presence while maintaining its distinctive design identity.
Today, Desigual continues to evolve with a focus on modern, omnichannel retail and contemporary lifestyle fashion. The brand remains committed to its core philosophy of positivity, individuality and self-expression, encouraging people to embrace what makes them different.
Desigual believes clothing is a form of expression that can influence mood and identity, and continues to design collections that combine colour, creativity and bold design to reflect this vision.
At Something Chic, we curate a selection of Desigual pieces that highlight the brand’s signature creativity and expressive style. Shop online or visit our Marlborough boutique to explore the latest collection.
